Most of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. At times, if the comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are several foods that, when you consume them, could boost your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to improve your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and jolly up!

Make a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all fantastic for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible since these foods have a bunch of magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given time. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a great source of protein.

If you would like to battle depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you overcome depression.

It’s not hard to overcome your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are great at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to better your mood. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. You digest these foods quicker than other things which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you become so much healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood also!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
