Most of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are bad and must be avoided. At times, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be really nutritious and good for you. There are some foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at fighting back depression. Just be sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. Whenever you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be fantastic for raising your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try to eat an egg and feel happier!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more you have of it, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are excellent if you would like to feel better. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you overcome your depression.

Grains can be excellent for fighting a terrible mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods as well. It’s easy to feel low when you feel famished! These grains can elevate your mood because it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You just knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental acuity while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you feel a lot healthier. And now you know green tea can help you be happier too!

You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you so you can feel better! Try these tips instead!
