Learn How to Improve Your Mood with Food

Mostly, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and must be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. At times, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for us to eat. There are several foods that, when you eat them, may improve your mood. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you fight depression. You need to make sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for boosting your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Eat a couple of eggs to jolly up!

Put together several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more serotonin you have, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a great protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent if you would like to be in a better mood. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

Some grains are actually great for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly great for helping boost your happiness levels. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods also. Feeling hungry can actually make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood sugar which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is actually good for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you be better. Now you know that applies to your mood too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try some of these hints instead.
