Try Using Food to Improve Your Mood

Most of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are bad and must be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. At times, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for us to consume. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, can boost your mood. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, you might be amazed to discover, are wonderful at fighting depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you elevate your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Eat an egg and feel happier!

Put together a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein food source.

If you want to overcome depression, try eating some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly raise your mood.

Some grains are really wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are terrific at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can really help to make your mood better. Feeling hungry can truly make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel better. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you want to feel better! Try several of these instead!
