Discover How to Improve Your Mood with Food

Many of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we need to keep away from them. At times, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this holds true. At times, comfort foods can be perfectly nutritious and good for us to eat. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, could boost your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you might be amazed to learn, are terrific at fighting depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Try eating an egg and be happy!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, on top of elevating your mood, can be a superb protein source.

If you wish to battle depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

It’s not difficult to drive away your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually great for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full too which can really help to improve your mood. Feeling hungry can be a real downer! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest. You digest these foods quicker than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is loaded with a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while also calming the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you be better. Now you know that it helps you to lift your moods too!

You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Try these tips instead!
