How to Improve Your Mood with Food

Mostly, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and must be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that, when you eat them, could boost your mood. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly wonderful at dealing with depression. You need to be sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be fantastic for raising your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try consuming a couple of eggs to cheer up!

Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which increases your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The more of it in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to combat depression. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all full of omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you overcome depression.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all great for helping you feel better. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. Feeling starved can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood can actually be helped by green tea. You were simply expecting to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you become healthier. Now you know that it helps you to raise your moods as well!

See, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try some of these suggestions instead.
