Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better

A lot of us have been taught to think that comfort foods are not good and should be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that, when you eat them, may boost your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly wonderful at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the egg yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, especially the yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–work better. Eat a couple of eggs to feel better!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for elevating your mood. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are good if you are wanting to be in a better mood. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3s. These are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly boost your mood.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really excellent for helping raise your happiness levels. These grains can help you feel full for longer also, which is a mood improver. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You just knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you become a lot healthier. Now you are aware that green tea can help improve your mood also!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try these suggestions instead!
