Foods That Make Your Mood Better
In general, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and must be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be really healthy and good for you. There are some foods that basically can boost your moods when you eat them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional boost, test out some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you combat depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be fantastic for raising your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and be happy!
Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more you have of it, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.
Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you are wanting to beat back depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3s. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you overcome your depression.
Some grains are actually wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all good for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to improve your mood. Feeling starved can truly make you feel awful! These grains can elevate your mood since it’s easy for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.
Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has been found to be packed full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while at the same calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be better. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!
You can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try some of these instead!
