Use Food to Boost Your Mood

A lot of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we must avoid them. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are several foods that, when you consume them, could boost your mood. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really terrific at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you don’t toss out the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Eat an egg and feel happier!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Nuts, on top of bettering your mood, can be a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are great if you are wanting to be in a better mood. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight depression.

Some grains are truly great for repelling bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are fantastic at helping you have a happier mood. They can help you feel full for longer also, helping you feel better. It’s easy to feel low when you are starving! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not hard to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You were simply expecting to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps improve your mental focus while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you feel a lot healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood as well!

You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are terrible for you so you can feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
