Foods That Make You Happy

Most of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that actually can raise your moods when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really great at fighting back depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. Every time you would like to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk especially, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating an egg and cheer up!

Make a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible since these foods have a bunch of magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a terrific protein food source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to battle depression. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Some grains are really wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are excellent at helping you feel better. They can help you feel full for longer as well, which can help your mood too. Feeling starved can truly bring you down! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood glucose which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is actually great for your mood. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has been found to be packed full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you drink green tea. And now you are aware that green tea can help you be happier too!

As you can see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try a couple of of these hints instead.
