How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Mostly, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and must be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for you. There are some foods that, when you eat them, can better your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually great at dealing with depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. When you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you boost your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Eat an egg and cheer up!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all helpful for elevating your mood. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which increases your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that tells the brain how to feel at any given time. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a great protein source.

If you wish to defeat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

Some grains are actually excellent for repelling bad moods. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to better your mood. Feeling starved can actually bring you down! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. You digest them more quickly than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You were just anticipating to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

As you can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are terrible for you so you can feel better! Try a few of these hints instead.
