Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better

For the most part, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and should be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is candy or another junk food, this holds true. At times, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for us to consume. There are several foods that really can boost your moods when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you combat depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you raise your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try consuming some eggs to cheer up!

Put together a trail mixout of various seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that tells the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to beat back depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3 fats and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly boost your mood.

Some grains are truly excellent for repelling bad moods. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are excellent at helping you be happier. They help you feel full also which can actually help to make your mood better. It’s not hard to feel a little bit off when you are starving! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is found to be chock-full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You probably already knew how easy it is to be healthy when you drink green tea. And now you know green tea can help improve your mood too!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Test out these suggestions instead!
