Learn How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

For the most part, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and have to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. Some foods actually do improve your mood when you consume them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you might be amazed to find out, are terrific at combating depression. Just see to it that you do not toss the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Eat a couple of eggs to cheer up!

Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all fantastic for helping to raise your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more you have of it, the happier you will feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein food source.

Cold water fish are great if you wish to feel happier. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you overcome your depression.

It’s not hard to drive away your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly excellent for helping raise your happiness levels. They help you feel full also which can really help to make your mood better. Feeling famished can be terrible! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this particular amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You already knew that green tea helps you be healthier. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood as well!

As you can see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try some of these suggestions instead.
